PDA, CoreMD and Pancreum Wedges

The Pancreum PDA

The PDA (Personal Diabetes Analyzer) is a wireless, Bluetooth enabled, hand-held device that interfaces with the CoreMD, which in turn controls the wearable glucose sensing and insulin or glucagon delivery wedges. The PDA is present in every Pancreum system configuration. Based on your system choice, the PDA's GUI App displays glucose levels, trends, graphs, insulin & glucagon delivery data, issues alerts & alarms, and keeps track of other events such as physical activity,BG readings and carbohydrate intake. The PDA may be your own smartphone running Android or Windows Mobile, or an iPhone/iPod Touch.

The Pancreum CoreMD

The CoreMD is the brain and heart of all Pancreum systems. It is a revolutionary wearable (but NOT disposable!) medical device hub/bus that allows multiple small, wearable, replaceable devices to co-exist. The CoreMD is present in every Pancreum system configuration. It serves as an infra-structure provider for those devices around it. It provides a rechargeable battery, Bluetooth communication or even a wired (USB) link to a smartphone or a PC. Its battery is designed to last and may be recharged via the USB connector. Other features include a piezo/speaker for alerts and alarms, and a push-button for such use as autonomous bolus deliveries without the PDA. All of this in a small, triangular package, equivalent in area to a square measuring about 25 mm x 25 mm (1" x 1"), with only 12 mm (1/2") in height. It provides 3 flexible connections for the GlucoWedge, BetaWedge and AlphaWedge. If all 3 devices are connected, it forms an Artificial Pancreas System made up of 4 interconnected devices, measuring only 55 mm (2 1/4") in diameter. That's only an area slightly larger (but lower profile/height!) than a popular, pod-shaped, insulin pump in the available market. This small package is water-tight, flexible/bendable at all 3 connecting points, and performs all 3 functions needed for an Artificial Pancreas, NOT just insulin delivery!
The CoreMD is an open-architecture, common-platform device with publically-known interface requirements. This will enable several small companies in the diabetes management field to use it as a hub/bus for their own artificial pancreas devices (CGM, glucagon pump, etc) and make the development of an artificial pancreas a reality much sooner. The CoreMD application software can be upgraded via Bluetooth or USB connection, and a Development Kit will be provided for all interested companies!

The Pancreum BetaWedge

The BetaWedge is a small, affordable, wearable, replaceable insulin pump. It is named after the pancreas beta islet cells, responsible for producing insulin. You can connect a pre-filled reservoir with up to 400 U of insulin to it. It only contains micro-mechanisms for insulin delivery and automatic subcutaneous insertion of its small, flexible cannula. It connects to the CoreMD and you can wear it on your body for three days. It delivers your programmed basal and bolus doses of insulin, based on your commands entered on the PDA, which sends them to the CoreMD via Bluetooth. It is only present in a Pancreum system configuration that requires this functionality.

The Pancreum GlucoWedge

The GlucoWedge is a wearable, replaceable continuous glucose sensing device, with an automatic sensor insertion mechanism, that connects to the CoreMD, which in turn communicates to the PDA via Bluetooth. You wear it on your body and the sensor measures glucose in the interstitial fluid every few minutes for three to seven days. It is only present in a Pancreum system configuration that requires this functionality.

The Pancreum AlphaWedge

An essential component of a TRUE artificial pancreas, the AlphaWedge is a small, affordable, wearable, replaceable pump that can deliver glucagon, cortisol, adrenaline or other substances needed to avoid hypoglycemia. It is named after the pancreas alpha islet cells, responsible for producing glucagon. It shares its architecture and features with the BetaWedge. It is only present in a Pancreum system configuration that requires this functionality.
